Born from a fervent desire to preserve Africa’s vibrant heritage, the Nollywood New Yam Festival blossomed. Recognizing Africa’s abundance in Agriculture, Arts, Crafts, and rich historical narratives, this festival emerged as the beacon to showcase these treasures, particularly to our beloved African diaspora.

Hailing from Umuoji, Idemili North LGA of Anambra State, Chief Onwurah’s cultural journey began in the embrace of tradition. Bestowed with chieftaincy title at an early age by his father, Chief Cyril Onwurah (Akpaniteaku), he imbibed the essence of cultural richness during formative years spent immersed in village gatherings and celebrations.

Steering the helm as the Chairman of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, Abuja Chapter from 2010 to 2017, Chief Onwurah’s influence amplified. His tenure saw the fusion of cultural celebration with the Guild’s expansive network, transforming the New Yam Festival into a nationwide spectacle and held annually in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja since 2012. Rising as the Chief of Staff to the National President, Chief Emeka Rollas Ejezie (MON) further cemented his commitment to preserving cultural roots.

Beyond his profound dedication to cultural rejuvenation, Chief Agility Onwurah finds solace in reading, football, scrabble, and embarking on exploratory travels—a reflection of his adventurous spirit.

His mission is clear: to propagate the beauty of African Culture, weaving tales through dress, cuisine, dance, arts, and authentic storytelling. His vision? A world that reveres, respects, and joyously celebrates diverse cultural values.

As the National Coordinator of Nollywood New Yam Festival & Awards, Chief Onwurah’s role extends beyond festivities. His year-round commitment involves fostering partnerships, rallying support from like-minded individuals, engaging community leaders, and overcoming challenges to shift perceptions about the festival’s significance in the face of modernity and tradition.

His journey isn’t just a passion; it’s a resolute dedication to preserving Africa’s legacy—a task that demands perseverance and unwavering conviction.
